WordCamp Salt Lake City 2017 – Retrospective
Our parent company, WebDevStudios, sent several team members to Salt Lake City to attend the local WordCamp. Salt Lake City has a vibrant and active WordPress development community and hosted their biggest WordCamp event in its history with 250 attendees. Here is a quick rundown of our team members who were present and accounted for:
Our COO, Lisa Sabin-Wilson, was asked to keynote the event and gave a presentation titled: Systems For Success. This talk provided valuable resources about the different systems designers and developers can put into place for their projects to help them be more efficient, more accountable to their clients and, ultimately, more profitable. Lisa touched on topics such as contracting, project planning, time tracking and communication tools, much like the systems we have in place here at eWebscapes and WebDevStudios!
Our talented Frontend Developer and Designer, Jo Murgel, talked to the Salt Lake City crowd about bridging the gap between design and development. Though it may not be true for all designers and developers, the fact is our industry calls for more targeted specialization—the days of multidisciplinary positions are becoming rarer. As a result, the connection between design and development is disappearing.
Jo is a designer and developer aiming to re-establish that connection. His talk went through several common problems between designers and developers and provided workflow improvements and tips to make the handoff between designers and developers much smoother.
Our Creative Director here at eWebscapes, John Hawkins, spoke about the part you play in your own website security.
When people think about the security of their website, they think it’s an issue that belongs solely to the IT department. False. Everybody plays a role.
In this talk, John demonstrated how every user on the website can help protect themselves and the website. He also covered information about passwords, password managers, public wifi, VPN, phishing scams, Facebook scams and more.
Our team had a GREAT time in Salt Lake City and enjoyed the opportunity to share our knowledge and information about WordPress with the fabulous community there. We’ll be back, for sure!
