C.A.R.E. – also known as the Center for Avian Rehabilitation and Education – is a local bird shelter and rescue organization that is close to my home, and close to my heart. My husband and I are bird lovers and we’ve spend quite a bit of time with the folks at C.A.R.E., and at their facility with the birds. They are a non-profit group who rescue exotic birds from negative situations – whether its household abuse, abandonment or similar situations. We are bird owners, ourselves, and the birds we own come from C.A.R.E….
C.A.R.E. currently maintains their website as a static HTML site, and will soon be launching their new design on their new and shiny WordPress powered site. Along with their site and blog elements, we’ve integrated an E-Commerce feature that will allow them to display and sell all of their bird products (toys, foods, etc) on their site using a shopping cart that integrates with their WordPress back end. It’s really convenient for them!
They will also use this site to blog about the stories of the birds they rescue, and successful bird adoption stories, as well as birds that are currently available for adoption. I have to always be careful when I read their bird stories – - I already own 5 birds here at home, I’m always so inclined to adopt them all!
The design was a lot of fun to do — I think my favorite part is the little bird feet prints that go up and down the pages! I’m really looking forward to helping them launch their new site!

I love the design, really cheerful and good attention to detail. Interesting that you’ve integrated a shopping cart with WordPress, which plugin did you use? Good to see WordPress being used more and more for non-typical blogging sites.

Thank you, Jason – I had a lot of fun with this one. We’re using the WP E-Commerce plugin to power the shopping cart on the C.A.R.E. site – it integrates nicely with WordPress and makes it easy for users to add new products and listings on the back end. Cheers!

It’s always nice to hear about an inspirational animal rescue story. I love the colors of the layout and the little birdie footprints all across the page.
As for the plugin, I didn’t know there was one that would work well with WordPress, that’s good to know! Good luck to them and their ventures saving birds (makes my heart warm to think about it, I have two parakeets), and good job to you for the design! It’s going to be a hit!
