We’ve been in the business of creating custom designed web sites since 2002 (ish) and we are looking to expand our team by one (possibly two) remote, part-time designer/developers. If you are interested in building custom web sites and making a decent income from doing so – this opportunity may be of great interest to you! Our projects will challenge you and if you’re up for it – then we’re up for talking with you!

Here’s the down and dirty:
Minimum Requirements:

Documented experience in graphic design and web development
Experience with WordPress is a must (Expression Engine, Movable Type, Typepad skills are nice, too, if you have ‘em)
HTML/CSS knowledge is a must
Good communication skills.
Excellent time management. Ability to work on a deadline
While the number one qualification for this opening is a strong sense of design (aesthetics) along with strong web skills, we’re also looking for individuals with great critical thinking skills, a good work ethic and customer service skills.
We run shop like a consultancy, which means you need to know your stuff- and their stuff (whoever they may be).
Do you have references from folks you’ve worked with in the past on web projects?? I’d LOVE to hear ‘em!
Maybe an online portfolio of work or client sites you can point me to so I can see your work in action? (screenshots are nice, but I like to dig a bit more beyond the pretty, ya know)

Types of Projects we’re doing lately:

WordPress web sites, mainly (some with and some without a blog) for small and large business, multisite networks, social communities and lots of social media integration.
WordPress with E-Commerce (Cart66, Shopp or WP E-Commerce experience greatly appreciated!)
WordPress MultiSite (and BuddyPress)
Membership sites with WordPress

Gets more kicks out of removing elements from a page than adding them

Surf Net Parents : Moveable Type Design

Surf Net Parents came to E.Webscapes in need of a fresh look for their Moveable Type professional blog. The goal? “Bring it into the 21st century with a fun, professional, conservative look. Not high-tech, not flashy. Fun, professional, relaxed, welcoming, trustworthy.”

Lisa customized the templates in Movable Type to accommodate custom post category display within a clean, three column design. Using a comprehensive category structure and subsequent category navigation, we created an organized and logical “Table of Contents” that Barbara wanted to provide to her site visitors to give them an ‘at-a-glance’ picture of what type of content the site contains.

She also wanted to make sure there was ample room on her site, within her articles, for advertising with Google ads, or any other ad program she participates in. We created a spacious area for the 300 x 250 ad banners on her pages that she is easily able to manipulate and change out ad banners when, and if, she needs to.

Barbara also wanted a vibrant color scheme to the over all design, but something simple that put the spotlight on her content more than anything else. The end result is a welcoming site that is well organized and easy to navigate.

SpyGolfer: Movable Type Site Design

Robert at SpyGolfer wanted to create a website for frequent updates with the newest golf gear. Robert came to E.Webscapes looking for a custom design for his Movable Type powered blog…

He was really excited by the bold colors of our own design here at E. Webscapes, so Lisa created a design that really emphasized those bright blue, green, and orange colors. He also wanted to subtlety place an emphasis on golf equipment, which Lisa accomplished through a simple yet bold header graphic.

Robert really loved the design throughout the entire project:

“Wow, I really love what you did! It looks awesome and is exactly the type of thing I was looking for. Thank you!”

Colorburned Movable Type Design

Grant Friedman from Colorburned contacted me to translate his design ideas into a functional Movable Type theme for his website. Grant showcases his art and talents on his site, and he required some very specific functionality to bring his Movable Type blog to the level of portfolio and showcase for his artwork…

Grant did provide the graphic design work and basic layout for his site, as he had a very specific vision for the creative direction he wanted to take with his Movable Type site. I did all of the Movable Type implementation, CSS and some custom coding and plugin installations/configurations to help make his project complete. It was truly a team effort between myself and my client and it worked out beautifully.

Grant provides some really beautiful vector designs and artwork on his site, as well as some very helpful tools for Photoshop and Adobe products. Check his site out at Colorburned if you have a chance – he’s got some really neat stuff over there!

Red Rock Foods Blog – Movable Type 4 Theme Project

In my previous post, I mentioned Bill from Iconoblog and Daily Buzz Coffee and talked about how he hired me to import his static HTML business site into Movable Type 4 and create a theme based on his current site. Red Rock Foods Blog was also a part of that project. . .

This project was the same as the Daily Buzz Coffee project in that it was an import of his existing, static HTML website into Movable Type to allow him greater flexibility and easier site maintenance and updates in the future. I based the new Movable Type theme on his existing design, along with some custom CSS and graphic design adjustments, as well.

It seems Bill is all set to go now with his three new Movable Type 4 blogs for both his business and his personal use. Best of luck in your endeavors, Bill!

Daily Buzz Coffee Movable Type Design Project

Bill, from Daily Buzz Coffee, approached me to set up his new coffee blog using the latest Movable Type 4 blogging platform. He had an already existing site that was built in HTML that he was updating manually. My job was to port his site over to Movable Type to make it much easier for him to update. . .

Using his main site graphics, I built a new theme for his MT blog from scratch. The site, originally, was done in tables with a ton of inline styling, so I didn’t use any of the code from his original site – just the graphics – and created a custom stylesheet (CSS) for the foundation and format of the site.

This was my first time working with the new MT4 and, as with anything new – it took me a bit to get used to the changes in their template engine. Once I got used to it, however, I really do like the way everything is organized.

Daily Buzz Coffee is a coffee shop/supplier in Arizona. Aside from coffee, they also do fresh bakery and non-coffee beverages, as well – - if you’re in the area, drop in an say hello! Let Bill know I sent you – perhaps he’ll give you a discount!

This is Bill’s second project with E.Webscapes. The first time he came to us was for his personal blog at Iconoblog, quite some time ago. Also wrapped up into this project, he wanted me to update his personal blog templates for MT4 – so I accomplished that at the same time, as well.

Mavrix Online is ..your source for current celebrity news, comings, goings and should or shouldn’t be doings! Hot off our cameras and straight to your computer for your paparazzi style pleasure…. I was happy to launch the Movable Type powered blog for Mavrix Online this month…

Gareth, from Mavrix Online, had some very specific ideas on what he wanted for the design work and we collaborated very closely on his layout and style. This isn’t just your typical celebrity gossip blogs – these are the guys who shoot the pictures that you all love and enjoy (come on.. admit it – you KNOW you do!).

Powered by Movable Type, Mavrix Online is primarily a photography showcase of their celebrity gallery. Soon, I will also be incorporating a full photo gallery and video gallery into their site as Phase I and II of the project.

I imported Mavrix Online over from their previous Typepad powered site, which included some back end database work to make sure all of the photos that they loaded on their Typepad account got ported over, onto their own servers, and then made sure that the image source within each and every single post reflected the new image locations. That’s well over 3000+ images and files!

Add a blog to your existing website

Frequently, I get requests to add a blog to an existing website. The popular request is to use the websites existing design and layout and built a blog with it. These blog design projects don’t make it into my portfolio of work because they are not designs I have completed – but I have done countless numbers… of these types of projects. I’ve taken the existing HTML websites and built a blog into it using Movable Type, WordPress, Blogger and Typepad – to name a few.

Typically the website owner will either create a new directory on their server so that their blog points to it – for example, something like this: http://thedomain.com/blog. Or, they will create a subdomain so that their new blog will point to that – for example: http://blog.thedomain.com. Either way works out nicely. My clients have hired me to perform the blog installation and design – adding in many nice features and existing plugins so they, and their readers, can get the most out of the blogging experience.

Sometimes, these types of projects can be a challenge because of the coding, style and format of the existing website. It’s much easier for me, the designer, to work with my own code, formatting techniques and structure – but I can’t be a design control freak all the time!

Many times, our clients will ask us to keep the coding elements the very same, where at all possible. At times, this forces me to … yes… build a blog with a tables based design.. eek! Trying to remember how to work with tables is a big challenge for me! However, at the end of the day – it is my client who has to maintain the blog, the design and format… and whatever format they are used to, whatever format makes it easiest for them to control and maintain is what will work the best for them. I do usually recommend a different structure and layout if it will be advantageous for them to change, and if they are willing to change.

Adding a blog to an existing website is a great way to extend the features on your website, particularly if you are running a business. It gives you an excellent opportunity to interact with your clients, potential clients and industry peers, not too mention that blogs are great for SEO (search engine optimization) due to the dynamic nature of blogs, and the ability to keep updated content flowing on your site. Having a blog also allows your business to provide a built-in RSS feed so your clients, readers and peers can keep up-to-date about your company news through your RSS feed.

WordPress Design – Exavius

James at Exavius really takes some killer photographs and showcases them on his blog! You really should check out his photography skills, he has some fabulous work!

James already had a blog powered by Movable Type, however he was very interested in migrating over to WordPress… after hearing about it?s ease, functionality and some of the functions that he really was interested in giving a shot.

WordPress makes it easy to migrate from Movable Type by using their import script to import all of the archives, comments and trackbacks from the MT blog into the new WordPress blog. After we did that – we set about setting up his new template in such a way that allows him to show of some of his really great photography work.

If you visit his site at Exavius and refresh his site a few times, you?ll get the chance to see some of his great work in the top banner of the site. Each time you refresh it – - you get a new taste of his talent because the it?s a different banner every time! James provided us with his own photography work in order to accomplish this.

James intends on using this new blog set up as a photoblog, as well. As soon as he gets in and is able to work with his photographs – - the thumbnails that make up the bar underneath his banner will be clickable to a larger image and the post that corresponds with that image post.

Now he can really showcase his work! Please drop by and get an eyeful of the beauty James can create through the lens of his camera. He?s terriffic!
