I started referring work to WebDevStudios back in 2009 when some of the requests I was getting at eWebscapes were more advanced, from a programming standpoint (custom plugins, etc), then what was currently within our scope. I first met Brad & Brian and their team at WordCamp Chicago in 2009 and have enjoyed their friendship and business partnership ever since.

I have been fortunate enough to spend time with them over the years, regularly, at events like WordCamps, Blog World and SXSWi – each time they’ve impressed me with stories of the work they are currently involved with and amazing tools and applications they’ve been building. Usually those times involved Brad, Brian and I having a few drinks and joking around about how awesome it would be if we joined forces and took over the world, building rainbows to the moon and back. One time, on a rooftop in NYC, after several beers, I, jokingly, gave Brad a number of what it would take for me to merge – - I am pretty sure he didn’t speak to me for an entire year after that.

Lisa Sabin-Wilson & Brad Williams WordCamp Raleigh 2010

Over the years, WebDevStudios has always impressed me with their work – as well as their involvement in various aspects of the WordPress community, either through live events (Brad is a co-organizer for WordCamp Philly and the WordPress Philly MeetUp group), contributing core code to the WordPress and BuddyPress projects, free plugins in the repository and more.

Brad Williams is a fellow Wiley author with an impressive bibliography of his own as the co-author of the successful line of Professional WordPress books: Professional WordPress and Professional WordPress Plugin Development. Between Brad & I – we have 5 best selling books on the topic of WordPress, with more to come down the road!

Brad, Brian and their team have a passion for the work they do that equals my own, and if I really think about it, our pairing was inevitable – it was just a matter of timing. That time came earlier this year at the WordCamp Baltimore event. The after party to that event involved more than a few adult beverages where Brad, Brian and I, once again, began to talk joining forces and dominating the world….or at least our little corner of it. One late night – after a short journey in the Inner Harbor, which involved pirates, a pirate ship and a bottle of rum, we were all three in agreement: Let’s do it, Arrrrr!

After each of these events, and years of similar conversations, we would usually travel back to our respective homes and get back to the tasks of running our respective businesses. This time, however, when I returned home from Baltimore, I sent an email to the two of them that basically said “Hey guys, what if we stopped joking around about it and had a serious conversation?”

Brad & Brian apparently think I bring a thing or two to the table and were interested. Several phone calls and one trip to Philly later – it was a done deal.

It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? Actually, the merging of two small business LLC’s is a bit more complicated than it seems like it should be – involving lawyers, accountants and LOTS of frank and honest discussion between partners to figure out the fine details. To me it seems like we’ve been working on this for a long time – - and on the same hand, it feels like it’s moving really fast, too! It’s been a lot of fun trying to keep this quiet, as we worked on the details, and went through the process of hiring a handful of new staff – it’s been HARD keeping my mouth shut.

We’re not quite done hiring yet, and with a few more new staff announcements to come in the new year, we’re excited!

For friends of ours who knew of our plans over the past few months (You know who you are – it was kinda hard to keep it from our happy WordPress family of geeks!), I thank you for keeping it our little secret until we could get all our ducks in a row to finally make it happen!

I’m happy to announce, effective January 1, 2013, I am officially a full partner at WebDevStudios and am excited to be joining this talented team of code pirates. We have some really exciting plans in store for WebDev in the new year and I’m beyond excited about it. Aside from Brad and Brian, I get to work with amazingly talented folks like Brian Richards, Justin Sternberg, Ryan Duff, Jayvie Cannono, Corey Collins, Michael Beckwith, Tom Carney and April Williams, to name just a few.

For my clients and partners at eWebscapes – you, as well as our history and services, are an important part of the plans we have in store for 2013! After 14 (!!) years of providing web solutions to my clients and partners at eWebscapes – I am more than a little excited about this new chapter and merging with a company like WebDev with their collective caliber of talent and brains – this is a move that I feel awesome about!

So, well….happy new year!

We’ve been in the business of creating custom designed web sites since 2002 (ish) and we are looking to expand our team by one (possibly two) remote, part-time designer/developers. If you are interested in building custom web sites and making a decent income from doing so – this opportunity may be of great interest to you! Our projects will challenge you and if you’re up for it – then we’re up for talking with you!

Here’s the down and dirty:
Minimum Requirements:

Documented experience in graphic design and web development

Experience with WordPress is a must (Expression Engine, Movable Type, Typepad skills are nice, too, if you have ‘em)

HTML/CSS knowledge is a must

Good communication skills.

Excellent time management. Ability to work on a deadline

While the number one qualification for this opening is a strong sense of design (aesthetics) along with strong web skills, we’re also looking for individuals with great critical thinking skills, a good work ethic and customer service skills.

We run shop like a consultancy, which means you need to know your stuff- and their stuff (whoever they may be).

Do you have references from folks you’ve worked with in the past on web projects?? I’d LOVE to hear ‘em!

Maybe an online portfolio of work or client sites you can point me to so I can see your work in action? (screenshots are nice, but I like to dig a bit more beyond the pretty, ya know)

Types of Projects we’re doing lately:

WordPress web sites, mainly (some with and some without a blog) for small and large business, multisite networks, social communities and lots of social media integration.

WordPress with E-Commerce (Cart66, Shopp or WP E-Commerce experience greatly appreciated!)

WordPress MultiSite (and BuddyPress)

Membership sites with WordPress

(…do you get a feeling that we do a LOT of WordPress sites??? we do!)

Work Environment

Your home because this is remote work – how cool is THAT?

In your pajamas, if you like

This is part time work

We’re looking for someone who

Thinks design is about solving problems, not making them

Likes to have a lot of fun tinkering around inside the guts of a blog

Gets more kicks out of removing elements from a page than adding them

Wants to learn, push themselves, and make the web a better place to be!

Wouldn’t mind making a few extra $$’s doing something they love! How much, you say? Well, why not apply and find out (hint: we ain’t talking about coffee money here!)

If you’re interested – you can apply using this form only (any other method of application will most likely get overlooked – - so don’t try to DM on Twitter or send a message on Facebook — please use this form only.)

I give each application consideration – but please do be patient as I go through all of the applications received. I will read them all and will be contacting you within the next week, or two. Thank you!

October 13 through October 30, 2010 – we are giving away one iPod Nano (16GB) with every single order that comes through our doors*. What gave me the idea to do this? Well, a few things… first, just LOOK at the colors of the iPod Nano logo … does it look familiar?? I thought so! It’s a perfect match and figured I just HAD to do something to tie two entities together who had such amazing tastes in schemes of color! Secondly, to offer our clients some thing a little extra this month to show our appreciation and excitement for what we do here at E.Webscapes!

That, and everyone could use a little music to make their lives a little brighter, right?

If you don’t know what the iPod Nano is – here’s the rundown…its a music player, to say the LEAST. In sleek anodized aluminum and seven bright colors – - coincidentally, the colors you find right here at E.Webscapes! The orange, pink, blue and green that we’re so fond of here!

The iPod Nano is tiny, portable and has an easy access touch screen, built with the same technology as Apple’s iPhone and iPad – to make it easy for you to choose, sort and play your music on the go! It hooks into your iTunes music collection – - sync it up with your computer or other iPods and go!

If you’ve thought about a sleek and beautiful new design for your web site, or blog – now’s the time to do it … between 10/13 – 10/30 of 2010 – we will not only rock your web site – - but we’ll rock your world with a little music fun. And, don’t forget, with only 73 shopping days until Christmas – and iPod Nano makes a GREAT Christmas gift, as well.

Here is what you do: place your order for our services and complete your order by 10/30 and the iPod Nano 16GB is yours – in whatever beautiful color you choose! Rock on!

I would like you to help me give a warm welcome to our newest associate, Charnell Lucich. Charnell is an exciting addition to E.Webscapes because of Charnell’s extensive background in marketing, sales and customer service. Most recently, Charnell previously worked for a large, international publicly traded company where she sharply honed her community and relationship building, marketing/sales and customer service skills and gained a priceless level of experience in the IT industry, as a whole.

I have known Charnell for the past 5 years, or so, on both a personal and professional level – – and it is with ZERO amount of hesitation that I bring Charnell on board at E.Webscapes to take charge of marking, sales and customer service needs here. I have 110% confidence in her abilities, and as you get to know her, will find that she is very capable, friendly, helpful and is very excited about joining the E.Webscapes team!

From her new bio on the E.Webscapes web site:

Charnell Lucich has been in the Web Hosting industry for more than 7 years, with a background in Finance and Marketing & Communications. Her most recent accomplishment was successfully creating and implementing a Social Media presence for a World Wide publicly traded company, building relationships and keeping the lines of communication open between customers and staff.

Being in the Marketing & Communications department (communications being the key-word), you can generally find her talking away on Twitter, FaceBook, Community Forums, and other Social Networking sites. Charnell is also a member of the Linux Journal Editorial Advisory Panel.

Mother of 2, Grandmother of 1, Charnell is always seeking new adventures in her spare time.

Charnell’s official title with E.Webscapes is “Project Manager & Sales” and her duties will include:

Marketing & Sales of E.Webscapes services and products

Customer service and pre-sales contact

Project management of E.Webscapes design projects

You can find Charnell on Twitter and Facebook - – and are likely to run into her in and around the web, and at various conferences and events – she’s VERY social!

Join me in welcoming Charnell to the E.Webscapes team – - we’re all very excited about what this means, as we have some fantastic and exciting plans and projects taking shape behind the scenes here, that I am very excited and anxious to share, publicly, when the time comes!

Have a happy, and safe, Labor Day weekend!

One of the really nice results of publishing several books over the past 3 years is that I do get asked to speak a lot at different types of industry events from WordCamps to social media and internet marketing events. I really love to do it, as I really enjoy connecting with people who read my books, and who are interested in the same things I am. This past month, I was in Austin, Texas; Vancouver, British Columbia, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and San Francisco, California. I enjoy, and am grateful, for the opportunities to connect with people from all over who are passionate about publishing, marketing, WordPress and social media.

I haven’t blogged a lot about my travel experiences – and I do intend to. It’s been a crazy month, so hence the lack of posts here. However, I do want to tell you about my experience in Oklahoma with the crew from iThemes, including some of the exciting stuff that they have going on over there, and why you should pay attention. The folks from iThemes are putting out some amazing products that I want to bring to your attention here. Aside from their iThemes offerings of premium WordPress themes, they started up their PluginBuddy site a few months ago and made available some killer plugins that you should be using – - some of them are free, some of them are not, but all around, they are invaluable and fill a big void, as far as I’m concerned:

Backup Buddy – I downloaded this particular plugin on the very day they released it and love it! Now, I recommend it to everyone I know because I’ve found it to be an invaluable tool for the work I do. It’s called Backup Buddy and it gives you the ability to fully backup your WordPress blog easily. This isn’t like exporting your posts and content via the WordPress exporter – - this plugin backs up EVERYTHING – - your content, themes, plugins, settings, options – everything! It also has a built in importer option that gives you the ability to import backups to restore your WordPress powered site in a flash. From a developer and designer standpoint, this has made my life SO much easier. I often create ‘sandbox’ or ‘test bed’ development sites while working on my client projects. With Backup Buddy – I can now get my sandbox development site set up just right with the necessary themes, plugins and options settings – - then I create a backup copy of it using BackUp Buddy .. and then import it into a new installation of WordPress (using the Backup Buddy import script) and I’m done. I don’t have to sit there and activate themes, plugins and then go through and set the plugin options and theme settings all over again, because the plugin takes care of all of that for me. It also has an option to schedule regular backups of your site, automatically. A description from their own web site:

BackupBuddy is an all-in-one solution for backups, restoration, and migration. The single backup file created by the plugin can be used with the importer script to quickly and easily restore your site on the same server or even migrate to a new host with different settings. Whether you’re an end user or a developer, this plugin is sure to bring you peace of mind and added safety in the event of data loss. Our goal is to keep the backup, restoration, and migration processes easy, fast, and reliable.

Pluginbuddy Mobile – This fantastic plugin creates a really nice iPhone version of your site for mobile browsers. It has a built-in style manager that gives you the ability to create and customize a mobile version of your site that displays beautifully in several different mobile browser systems, such as : Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, Android Device, Palm Device, Blackberry Device, Windows CE Device, Mobile IE, Sony Playstation Portable, Sony Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Whew!

The team at Pluginbuddy, headed up by developer Dustin Bolton, have really worked hard on this one. It’s a really simple and easy way to make sure your web site renders well on mobile devices – I’m working with it currently on several client sites and it’s easy to use and an excellent mobile browsing plugin solution for WordPress.

So, speaking of the iThemes team – I had a really great time at their Builder Bootcamp weekend in Oklahoma and want to send out a big thanks to Cory Miller, Jen Miller and the rest of the iThemes team for inviting me down to their event. There were roughly 70-75 people in attendence, all of them passionate WordPress users, and all of them part of the iThemes community. Many were from the Oklahoma City general area – but there were a handful that flew in hundreds of miles away to spend the weekend with the iThemes crew to learn more about WordPress and how they can use the iThemes offerings to build their web sites with WordPress. Great stuff!

I had the opportunity to share experiences with the iThemes community in Oklahoma City in April, 2010

To kick off the event, I spoke on my own experiences with WordPress, spoke a little about opportunities that WordPress offers its users and spoke a little about BuddyPress. This was a crowd that was really engaged, passionate and curious about how they can leverage the publishing power of WordPress. Lots of great questions and feedback and I had a super time.

While there, iThemes did some give-aways of my BuddyPress For Dummies book to the people who attended Builder Bootcamp. I was pleasantly surprised at how many of the attendees brought their copy of WordPress For Dummies for me to sign for them – that was a bonus! Many of them even made the trek across the street to the local Barnes and Nobel to purchase a copy of WordPress For Dummies so I could sign it – - that was fun! I ended up signing about 50 books that weekend – - so I had the chance to brush up on my autographing skills!

The rest of the weekend saw iThemes team members like Matt Danner, Chris Jean, Cory Miller and Benjamin Bradley (of the iThemes WebDesign.com division) speaking on various topics such as design, plugins, marketing and promotions – along with a really helpful Q&A session with their community at the end.

I learned about their Builder theme, which is a WordPress theme framework that enables you to create several different types of layouts with just one theme. Chris Jean is the brains and developer behind the Builder framework and they’ve built a really cool community of users who are using the Builder framework to create dynamic WordPress sites. Check it out if you have some time – it might just fit into what you’re trying to do with WordPress, with 9 different child themes to choose from (and more coming), a built in style manager and a dedicated SEO plugin – - and the support team at iThemes is second to none – - this is really a super group of folks.

I also enjoyed the opportunity to meet members of the iThemes community, like Lynn Dye (pictured with me on the left) — who, by the way, expressed an interest in interviewing me for her own blog while I was in Oklahoma – - she published her experiences at Builder Bootcamp, as well as the interview she did with me on her blog.

I had the chance to sit and talk one-on-one with iThemes founder, Cory Miller, about what they’ve been up to and what the future holds for the iThemes brand – it was an enjoyable and enlightening weekend and very much worth the time spent in Oklahoma City. Cory, and his wife Jen, are super nice people – aside from being wholly impressed with what they’ve built…I just flat out like them. I’m looking forward to seeing them again at WordCamp Raleigh and talking with them more about some exciting future collaborations.

Some upcoming events that I’ll be attending in the next month:

It has been a LONG LONG time since I have been to Vancouver. I visited once and climbed all the way to the top of Grouse Mountain and had a blast! When the organizers of the F5Expo event contacted me to see if I had any interest in speaking and participating in their conference, I jumped at the chance to visit Vancouver again. Despite the fact that it is an incredible distance away from Wisconsin – I couldn’t bring myself to say no.

I am doing several things at the F5Expo - it’s really exciting! The event is on April 7th 2010 and is being held at the Vancouver Convention Center.

First, I am speaking on a panel called The Metrics of Social Media – my co-panelists include:

Alfredo Tan – Senior Director of Sales, Facebook

Darren Barefoot – Author: Friends with Benefits

Kris Krug – President, Bryght

What a line up! I am excited to be a part of the panel talking about how to effectively market your business using social communities like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Youtube, and Squidoo. What do I bring to the table on this panel? Why WordPress and BuddyPress, of course! This panel also explores the possibility of hosting your OWN social community on your own domain and why that may be, in some cases, a better plan and using the other networks like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as a second layer of your marketing strategy. (teaser: it’s all about who owns your content, your traffic and your community)

Second – I’m running TWO workshops at F5Expo:

WordPress For Dummies – How some of today’s leading companies are using WordPress. Attending this workshop does not infer that you are a ‘Dummy’ by any stretch of the imagination! Instead, it is meant to explore the ease in which individuals and small business are able to host a dynamic, interactive and useful web site of their own for the very low cost of free. Together, we will have a look at how some of today’s leading companies are using WordPress to runs sites that range from basic blogs to fully integrated web sites with portfolios, galleries, e-commerce and more!

Building Your Community with BuddyPress – Helping you determine if BuddyPress is right for your site. This workshop introduces you to the features available, aimed toward helping you make the decision if BuddyPress is right for your site, and has features that you would like to add to enhance and grow a social community on your own domain.

BIG thanks to the crew over at PEER1 Hosting for sponsoring both of my workshops at F5Expo. I’m very excited to be working with Peer1 again. My good friend, Rajan Sodhi from PEER1 and ServerBeach will be there – and having just come off a fabulous trip to Austin for the SXSW Interactive festival where I had the opportunity to spend some time catching up with the whole ServerBeach San Antonio crew – I’m excited to hook up with their Vancouver crew to round out the month!

If I am lucky – I may even get the opportunity to meet Malcom Gladwell, the author of Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, & What the Dog Saw. Malcom is keynoting the event – definitely something to look forward to!

If you are in Vancouver, and/or attending F5Expo - drop me a line! I’m there from April 6-8th – and who knows, maybe I’ll even climb the mountain again while I’m there!

I always have a fantastic time during my visits to SXSW – - I get the chance to rub noses with some favorite geeks across the internet, from all points on the globe and do a little promotion of my various books and projects that I have going on at the time.

I am leaving for Austin exactly one week from today! I am flying out of Milwaukee on March 11th and am staying in Austin through March 15th. I will be mainly out of the office during those dates – but will be checking email and, of course, progress on various ongoing projects that are in my current and active queue. Should you need to get in touch with me directly during those dates, please send us an e-mail and my assistant, Lindsey, will be happy to assist you – - or grab my attention in Austin if it is urgent.

If you are reading this and are also planning on being in Austin for SXSW – please let me know! I love SXSW for the opportunity to meet new people and to put faces to names I see floating around in my Twitter and Facebook accounts!

Together, last year, Brian and I hosted 200 WordPress fans in downtown Chicago and enjoyed a fabulous weekend of sharing, networking, food and fun! This year, we are anticipating to more than double that number and are expecting 500+ WordPress fans to invade Chicago the weekend of June 5&6!

Together, last year, Brian and I hosted 200 WordPress fans in downtown Chicago and enjoyed a fabulous weekend of sharing, networking, food and fun!
I decided to start out this years event with a web site overhaul at wordcampchicago.com – - not that last year’s design wasn’t a good one (of course it was, I designed that one too!) – but this year, I wanted to incorporate some of the highlights from last year. I created a bit of a photo slide show as part of the header design of the blog that shows off all of the photos I took at WordCamp Chicago last year.

Using one of Brian’s themes from his StudioPress offerings, I used his Education theme as a framework for the site – which fit really nicely since we’re both organizing the event – - his theme combined with my graphic design and finishing touches further communicate our partnership in running a fun and successful event!

If you are in the Chicago area – - or even if you aren’t (we’re expecting folks from all over the country!) – consider attending WordCamp Chicago! You can register for your tickets on our web site – - but be sure to register early! Last year, we sold out – so make sure you secure your spot this year before it gets sold out!

If you are planning on attending – be sure to ping me so I know to look for you to say HI!
