Blog Visibility: Google Ping Service ~ Lisa Sabin-Wilson

Folks already know about Google’s Blog Search service. A few months back, I started noticing a lot of hits coming from there to this site. See, Google’s Blog Search monitors some of the popular ping services … out there - for example, like Automattic’s Ping-O-Matic. Google monitors it, and when your site updates with those services, it also updates with Google Blog Search.

This month an annoucement was made at the Official Google Blog that it launched the Google Ping Service: “which is a way for individual bloggers and blog platform providers to inform us of content changes

The FAQ on the service states that Google does not intend on discontinuing their monitoring of other ping services - so it would appear to me that if you use Ping-O-Matic, or another mass ping service, there doesn’t seem to be a reason to add Google’s Ping Service to your ping services list. (WordPress users almost always use Ping-O-Matic every time they post - it comes pre configured, so unless you’ve removed it, you’re covered).

Unless I’m missing something? I suppose it’s always better to be safe, than sorry - so go ahead and add it in.. keeping in mind that the more ping services you have listed, the higher the risk of your posts timing out on you (depending on what kind of server day those ping services are having at that particular time.

As for me? I’m sticking with Ping-O-Matic unless I hear differently that there’s gold to be dug deep within Google’s ping service. If you find gold, let me know, would ya?
